Book Review: Hello, Cupcake!

hello cupcakeThere was much excitement last night as the final of the Great British Bake-Off left bakers everywhere inspired to try their hand at making beautiful and tasty cakes. We have a wide range of books on baking everything from bread to wedding cake, and Hello, Cupcake! by Alan Richardson and Karen Tack (BOOK ZONE 641.8653) is filled with imaginative ways of decorating cupcakes (or, as we know them in Britain, fairy cakes) that will have you breaking out the baking trays!

Hello, Cupcake! is a joyful book that shows you the basics of cupcake baking and then loads of different cupcakes in the shape of everything you can think of. There are cakes for weddings, birthdays and Christmas, as well as a whole range of ‘April Fools’ cupcakes designed to look like savoury foods! I’m not sure I ever asked for cupcakes that look like corn on the cob, but they look really delicious.

The authors of Hello, Cupcake! are American, meaning that some of the ingredients they mention are difficult to get here, but there are plenty of British substitutes that can be used instead. However, even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, there’s a lot to love about the turkey-shaped cupcakes and the ‘Candy Stars and Stripes Forever’.

Just in time for Hallowe’en, there are cupcakes with creepy-crawlies on, and spooky decorations of pumpkins, aliens and even werewolves! There are also plenty of other weird and wonderful cupcake designs, such as the Big Top and cupcake versions of Van Gogh’s paintings of Sunflowers and A Starry Night. All are presented in easy-to-follow steps, with gorgeous photographs and friendly advice.

Even if these cupcakes don’t appeal, the practical and helpful suggestions for how to put letters on your cupcakes or use sweets to make faces will inspire you to try out your own ideas, and who knows – maybe it’ll be you on Bake-Off someday!
