David Bowie 1947-2016

Yesterday musician David Bowie, also known as Ziggy Stardust, the Goblin King and the Thin White Duke, returned to whatever distant star he called home. Tributes have been flooding in from artists, producers, actors, musicians and friends: you can read a selection here, or search the #DavidBowie hashtag on Twitter. In 2013 Bowie provided a reading list of 100 books for the David Bowie Is exhibition, currently on display at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. You can find the complete list here (in chronological order, rather than order of preference) but we’ve searched the Information Store catalogue to bring you a list of books available now to borrow. It’s easy to picture Bowie reading Christopher Isherwood in the Berlin apartment he shared with Iggy Pop, or underlining words in 1984 as he envisioned a dystopia for Diamond Dogs. Bowie’s fascination with Japanese Kabuki theatre is evident in his choice of Yukio Mishima’s The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea; Nights at the Circus is set in a freak show underbelly similar to the one he explored in The Elephant Man. Bowie’s legacy doesn’t just include music- his films, fashion, poetry, painting and photography were all inspired, at least in part, by the titles below. How much more encouragement do you need?
