The Hollywood Blacklist

Every year over 250 Hollywood execs respond to a survey asking “what is the best script you DIDN’T get to make into a film this year?” If a script receives more than six mentions, it makes it onto “The Blacklist”, and if the screenwriter is lucky, a bidding war will commence for the rights to produce a movie that many wish they’d made…but didn’t.

This year’s Blacklist will be revealed on Friday 9th December, but until then, you can find the following blacklisted movies in the Information Store- speak to staff if you need help locating any DVDs.

Babel ♦ Blades of Glory ♦ Charlie Wilson’s War ♦ Juno ♦ The Kite Runner ♦ Little Miss Sunshine ♦ Love in the Time of Cholera ♦ Notes on a Scandal ♦ Stardust ♦ (500) Days of Summer ♦ Changeling ♦ Invictus ♦ Never Let Me Go ♦ The Road ♦ Nowhere Boy ♦ Sherlock Holmes ♦ No Strings Attached ♦ The King’s Speech ♦ Snow White and the Huntsman

Juno, from screenwriter Diablo Cody, is heavy on contemporary dialogue. Viewed as something of a gamble, the film eventually made over $200 million worldwide!

It can sometimes take years for a blacklisted script to make it to the screen. A script based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel Life of Pi first appeared on the Blacklist in 2006. The film adaptation was finally released 6 years later and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 2012 Oscars. It lost to Argo– yet another script which was pulled from the Blacklist!

The Blacklist’s dedicated writing blog Into the Story is full of screenwriting advice. We love their regular feature ‘A story each day for a month’, where writers scan the news for stories that could become excellent movies (Hijabi ballerinas, yes. Catholic robots…maybe) Browse the archive here.
